Get the Strife Out of Your Life

Strife quietly erodes strength, relationships, and spiritual momentum—but when we choose peace, we position ourselves for clarity, fruitfulness, and God’s blessing.

Strife is not a small issue in Scripture. It is never presented as neutral or harmless. Left unchecked, strife creates confusion, weakens relationships, and opens doors God never intended to be open in our lives.

James speaks directly to the seriousness of strife: “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.” —James 3:16–18

According to Scripture, strife is a thief. It robs clarity. It robs strength. And it undermines God’s work in our lives, our relationships, and our purpose.

We see this clearly in the story of Abraham and his nephew Lot in Genesis 13. As both men prospered, tension arose between their herdsmen. The land could no longer sustain them together, and strife threatened to escalate.

Rather than asserting his rights, Abraham chose wisdom. He said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me… for we are brethren.” Even though God’s covenant promise rested on him, Abraham invited Lot to choose first and trusted God with the outcome.

Abraham understood something essential: God’s blessing does not follow a location—it follows a person. He knew that strife always erodes prosperity, advancement, and relationships, and he was unwilling to live in strife and lose the blessing of God.

Lot chose the land that looked best by sight. Abraham chose peace and trusted God. After they separated, God spoke again to Abraham, reaffirming His promise and expanding his vision in every direction. Peace positioned Abraham for greater blessing.

Strife always erodes strength.
Strife always erodes advancement.
Strife always erodes relationships.

Scripture reminds us that it is to one’s honor to avoid strife, while a fool is quick to quarrel.

Strife is also contagious—but so is peace.

Proverbs compares the beginning of strife to a small break in a dam. What starts as a trickle can quickly become a flood. Strife does not stay small, and it rarely stays personal. It spreads into families, workplaces, and environments, affecting everyone involved.

Our homes, relationships, and communities are meant to be places of refuge—safe shelters marked by grace, kindness, and stability. God calls His people to be carriers of peace, not contributors to tension. When we allow the peace of God to rule in our hearts, it overflows into the lives of those around us.

God offers a peace that guards our hearts and minds—a peace that surpasses understanding and becomes a gift to everyone we encounter.

Lord, search our hearts and reveal any place where strife has taken root. Give us the humility to pursue reconciliation, the wisdom to guard our words, and the grace to forgive as You have forgiven us. Fill us with Your peace, and help us become people who carry Your presence into every relationship and environment. May our lives create space for Your blessing and Your righteousness to grow.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
