This World is Not Our Home

As citizens of heaven, we are called to live with order, love, and urgency while we wait for the return of Jesus.

In Romans 13, Paul gives a practical picture of what faithful Christian living looks like in the world around us. He addresses how believers relate to governing authorities, how we love our neighbors, and how we live in light of Christ’s return.

This chapter reminds us that while we live in this world, this world is not our home. Our ultimate allegiance belongs to King Jesus.

Citizens of Heaven in an Earthly World

Paul begins by teaching that believers should live as people who honor authority and reflect the order of God. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be people of peace—not chaos, not lawlessness, and not disorder.

That does not mean earthly authority is perfect. But it does mean we trust that God is sovereign and at work even in the midst of flawed leaders and broken systems. As citizens of heaven, we live with confidence that our true King is still on the throne.

Our lives should reflect trust in God’s greater purpose, even in uncertain times.

Loving Our Neighbor Well

Paul then shifts to one of the clearest marks of Christian maturity: love.

He reminds us that our ongoing obligation is to love one another. The love of Christ should shape the way we engage with the people around us—our neighbors, our communities, and the world God has placed us in.

This kind of love is not distant or abstract. It looks like compassion, kindness, selflessness, and genuine care for others. It means living in such a way that people see the heart of Jesus through us.

We are not just called to believe the gospel. We are called to live it out where we are.

Wake Up — Time Is Running Out

Paul closes the chapter with a strong sense of urgency: “Wake up… time is running out.”

He points believers to the reality that Christ is coming again, and because of that, we should live alert, awake, and ready. This is not the time to drift spiritually or live casually. It is the time to cast off darkness, put on the armor of light, and live in a way that honors Jesus.

Romans 13 calls us to reject compromise and to live with eternity in view. Every day matters. Every moment matters. Every opportunity to reflect Christ matters.

Clothed in Christ

Paul’s final encouragement is powerful: “Clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

That means living intentionally, relying on the Holy Spirit, and making no room for the flesh to rule our lives. We cannot do that in our own strength. We need the grace and power of Jesus every day.

As we live surrendered to Him, our lives become a testimony of His order, His love, and His coming kingdom.

Application for the Week

  1. Live as a citizen of heaven.
Remember that your ultimate loyalty is to Jesus, not the systems of this world.
  2. Reflect God’s order and peace.
Choose trust over panic and peace over chaos.
  3. Love your neighbor intentionally.
Look for practical ways to show kindness, compassion, and the heart of Jesus.
  4. Wake up spiritually.
Live with urgency and remember that every day matters in light of eternity.
  5. Put on Christ daily.
Rely on the Holy Spirit to help you live in holiness, love, and readiness.

Reflection & Discussion

  1. What stands out to you most from Romans 13?
  2. What does it mean to live as a citizen of heaven while still living on earth?
  3. How can believers reflect God’s peace and order in a chaotic world?
  4. In what ways can you love your neighbor more intentionally this week?
  5. Are there areas of compromise or spiritual drift that God is calling you to lay down?
  6. How does the promise of Christ’s return shape the way you live right now?

Lord, thank You that our true citizenship is in heaven and that Jesus is our King. Help us to live with peace, order, and trust in a chaotic world. Teach us to love our neighbors well, to live with urgency, and to keep eternity in view. Clothe us with the presence of Jesus and empower us by Your Spirit to live in a way that brings honor to Your name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
