Safely Surrendered Baby Awareness Month
For most people, the birth of a child is a happy occasion celebrated with family and friends. But for some women, childbirth becomes a crisis – and the decisions made following an infant’s birth can be a matter of life or death for the child. It’s important that we, as the body of Christ, know about the Safely Surrender Baby Law, which provides a life-giving option to a mother in crisis.
In Kern County, the Safe Surrender Law, allows a person with lawful custody, to surrender the child within three days of birth, safely into the arms of any fire department or hospital emergency room personnel. Since 2006, 91 babies have been safely surrendered in our county, 6 babies were saved in 2021. Check out the Department of Women Services for additional information on the Safely Surrender Baby Law so you can be ready, if you ever need to help someone in crisis.
