The Orphan

"Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world."

James 1:27

Did you know?

Within the U.S. there are over 400,000 children currently living in foster care. In many cases these children are victims of abuse, neglect or abandonment, in some cases one or both of their parents have died. The statistics on children and homelessness within the U.S. is even more alarming; 1.5 million or 1 in 50 children experience homelessness each year. The global statistics on orphans are even more catastrophic, the current estimate is over 140 million worldwide. This is a complex issue and CityServe is making a difference across several different fronts both domestically and globally.

How can you make a difference?

Royal Family Kids Camp

For more than 20 years, Canyon Hills has organized a summer camp for abused and neglected children from Kern County’s foster care system. Each year, volunteers from our church spend a week being the hands and feet of Jesus to children who have suffered abuse and neglect and been removed from their home.

Can one week really make a difference? You bet it can! During that week of camp, children are treated like royalty! Most importantly, kids learn that no matter what hardships they may experience, there is a God who loves and cares for them more than they could ever imagine!

Throughout the year, many of our camp staff meet with campers for an ongoing Royal Family Kids Club and mentorship.

Support for Foster Families

If you are a foster parent, resource family, kinship guardian, or walking alongside children and families through the foster care journey, we invite you to join our monthly support group. This is a safe, welcoming space to be encouraged, prayed for, and strengthened alongside others who understand the joys and challenges you carry. Together, we share wisdom, offer practical support, and remind one another that you are not alone—and that the work you’re doing matters deeply. Whether you’re new to fostering or have years of experience, there’s a seat for you at the table.

If you are interested in providing support for foster families, we also encourage you to connect with us!
